Zuck reviews another competing platform on another competing social platform. Is is also really weird to not be able to tell if this is actually Zuck or a deepfake. Visual quality and his language both feel like they are right on the edge.
Yeah I know what you mean — maybe we are just all actively paranoid about it now but it’s a little uncanny value “deep fake” was my first reaction! Now I think it’s probably real. Zuck just has a naturally plastic-looking face.
The odd lighting made it so I kept expecting the video to end with "oh and I'm not actually here in this room, I'm just here virtually, using our new avatar thing which is way better than Apple's personas"
Zuck briefly teases that the next generation of Meta will be the “open model” like PCs were vs Macs. If I’m understanding that correctly, he’s implying the Quest OS will be available to other VR hardware. Perhaps even open source?
I think he's referring to the fact that you can sideload apps as well as run most most smartphone Android apps on the Quest, and also use it as a PC headset.
I think you are reading too far into that comment. It's probably about them using Android as a base OS. I doubt they have any plan to make their proprietary parts available to other manufacturers and honestly I don't know if it would make much sense because everything is very optimized for each specific headsets. They have different sensors, camera positions and other technical capabilities, it's very different than mobile phones.
Maybe. Although from a strategic standpoint, it seems to make more sense to be the next Windows or Android for this type of platform to reduce the surface area they need to compete on for both OS and hardware, which Apple does masterfully.
If they were to help standardize the headset hardware requirements and necessary configurations for their OS, I could see it happening.
I wasn't expecting to find that nearly as compelling as I did. It actually makes me want to get a Quest 3. His point about "open" also makes me very happy. Between the open source stuff they've been doing the last many years such as React et al, contributions to CentOS, and of course the massive contribution of LLaMa, I've found myself slowly shifting from "Facebook is an evil company" to "Wow Facebook has become one of the companies I view more favorably, though of course they still have a lot of generic big-tech evils in them." These are strange times.
The thing that has been holding me back is Linux support. I've been Linux-only now for 10+ years and have no interest in setting up Windows.
Has anybody done the Quest with Linux only? Last I heard the experience was frustrating and lots of stuff didn't work. Is that still the case?
I was just recently trying to set up Quest 2 with Linux. You have to enable dev mode and sideload an app called ALVR on it, and the PC. Wireless streaming works but not great fidelity. Doesn't support Wayland.
On Windows - Download the official Quest app, everything works OOB
Sorry for what is probably a stupid question, but do the games run on the Quest or on the PC or a mix of both? If I never used it with a PC, what could I do with it?
:P when is Zuck Coke? This watch like a value sales pitch. We removed that feature, we going to add it back. For most of you, our product is better. And Cheaper in cost.
To clarify, the example is purely to highlight the pointlessness of asking such direct competitors for a meaningful evaluation of the others product.
It does not intended to mean Pepsi and coke companies are similar to Apple vs Facebook.
And actually my example doesn’t nearly convey how pointless it is to ask zuck about a competitor’s vr system. Zuck bet so big on his own VR dreams he renamed his company after VR.
They cannot make it cool. No one can make a 1.5 pound box of plastic, metal, and glass strapped to your face look like anything but nerd goggles. Apple spent a fortune trying and I doubt any person who wears makeup or pays any attention to their hair is gonna strap this dorkbox tightly to their face, mussing their hair and destroying their makeup. If Apple can't get women, it can't make it fashionable. It's really that simple. This is a geek mask for losers type weenie bros, no less embarrassing than Meta's all plastic one.
I don’t think it looks cool either, but this is exactly what everyone said about AirPods when Apple first announced them. Everyone thought they looked ridiculous and nobody would ever buy them, but now they’re ubiquitous and can be found everywhere. Apple knows how to make things fashionable.
Nah. Air pods are mostly inconspicuous and tucked out of the way. This is a 1.5 pound dork box on a person's actual face. Faces are special. We place beauty and sexual attraction there. People, especially those who care about hair and makeup, aren't gonna go for that.
I'm not gonna bother messing with any of these headsets until they're using transparent OLED displays instead of video passthrough for AR. Why deal with the latency and bulk to show what's already going on right in front of me in infinitely high resolution?
That’s not going to work, because you need lenses in front of the displays for their content to be correctly angled into your eyes, and at the same time those lenses would make a transparent passthrough be useless.
Thanks for the explanation; this sent me down an interesting rabbit hole which cleared up a fundamental misconception I had about how Google Glass' prism projector display works and its limitations.
It's almost the opposite. The average YouTube product reviewer has a similar polish, and this video is purposely low-key to imitate that style of authenticity. Kind of like when people sit in front of a backdrop with headphones on to imitate the Joe rogan podcast.
That is not what pass through looks like on the device plus there is a delay with the feed. Wii level graphics. Hand tracking is terrible thus the need for controllers. Facebooks metaverse takes over a 40% cut from developers yet he whines about the app stores 30%.
Previously He faked his avatar leg demo with motion capture and the “Improved face Graphics“ both of which are still vaporware.
The quest line has dominated the VR headset market for years yet continues to lose billions (over 40 so far). Remember He stopped the Facebook phone because of the huge losses.
Sooner or later facebook is going to stop subsidizing the cost of the headset. Then we’ll see how many folks will pay at least double for a face game console toy.
He looks better now that he's older and has a little wear on his face. The combination of awkward and mirror-polish-sheen was disconcerting. Now that he has bags under his eyes and less of a baby face, he looks more like a real person.
