Isn't the point of that statement in the context of this article that maybe we don't need to pay more for goods? If companies have so much extra capital, some of that could be turned into higher wages for employees, since we already are paying higher prices.

This isn't true. You can write a type safe data structure. It is simply for one type; you can't share it. That inability to share is the part that generics fixes, but saying you can't write type safe structures is inaccurate.
Then the question is whether team productivity has gone up, even though your own personal productivity may have gone down? You probably accomplished a lot being helpful, though I know that doesn't help how you feel. And if your performance is tied to personal productivity, then that is a real bummer.
