By Rock, it seems they mean guitars. No doubt the industry was dripping with greed and corruption, but what does that have to do with the growth of the synths, drum machines, Hip Hop, etc.?
Tastes change. Rock became one of many genres. Case closed.
p.s. And if you still want Indie guitars I would start with Fontaines DC.
Yeah, so? It's not rock if there's no guitars, just like you can't have classical music without an orchestra (with strings, etc.), you can't have big band without trumpets, etc.

Strangely, though, rock remains highly popular in other places like Japan and Europe. It's only America where people are all listening to hip-hop all the time.
The irony of your comment should not be lost. But sure let's all join the HN Small Minded Club and comment before we read the article and think. It's all the rage here...like rock music once was. Get it?
Apology accepted. Next time just move along. Thanks.
By mentioning Bach, you proved my point. That is, tastes change. Bach is no longer top of the charts either.
Put another way, the author's argument is effectively "the music I like and the music I grew up on is no longer the genre of the mainstream." Wow. That's insightful. Life moved on? As if he's never read a history book.
FFS...you're attacking me? Grow the fuck up. Gawd this is getting tiring.
p.s. Rock as defined by the R&R Hall of Fame is *not* limited to guitars. Whose definition do we believe, the article of the HoF? Gee. Tough call when you're practicing to be another HN prickly person, eh.
