Understanding Awk (earthly.dev)

awk is exceptionally useful in one-liner command line pipelines. I use it on a regular basis.

But it's slightly weird, and doesn't always give useful syntax error messages. It's from 1977. Nevertheless, it survives while "replacements" like perl have come and gone. Why is that? Surely some masterful company like Microsoft could make a consistent, intuitive replacement.


Has perl "gone"? I'm certainly using on a regular basis at least 2 programs written in perl.
