I just deleted my Gitlab account. I'll be self-hosting personal projects from now on. It's clear that as an individual user of a third-party service you have virtually no control. No matter who you choose, the odds are that the owners of the service will eventually succumb to the siren song of VC money and sell their users' souls as a result.
