>Asking that CEO "does TikTok access the home wifi network?" is such an incomplete question.

It's similar to what phones ask the user on behalf of the app.

I don't see what the problem is, imo it is a specific question. Almost no apps access the home wifi network, they connect to a remote server on the wan side of the network going directly through the default gateway/router, knowing nothing of the devices in the lan.

Perhaps this could be achieved by blacklisting the cloudflare parent certificate in your browser?

Who's going to pay for that? Not only the software, but the video hosting, transcoding, etc.

And don't tell me you can do it with p2p - the entire point of tiktok is that you can load new videos by swiping your finger. If every video takes 10 seconds to begin buffering nobody will want to use your app.

I heard these same arguments about the Linux kernel, back in the days before it came along and ate everyones' lunch.

This app can be built, quite easily, by anyone motivated to do so. Just like the kernel, just like a distribution vendor, just like any one of the thousands of highly successful open source, community-oriented projects out there.

Their algo is the best. Not even the big players have been able to copy.

Hypothesis: it’s not being copied because it connects users to more users, instead of connecting users to brands.

Of course they do. It's got another name (抖音) but it's basically the same exact product.

it’s the same product but they only allow educational content and stuff that promotes Chinese hegemony.

They let the rest of the world have nyquil chicken.

It's dance videos, memes and cat videos. And also billions more ads. The 'OMG ITS LE SMART PPL TIKTOK' is a falsehood created by sensationalism.

> they only allow educational content

Douyin is full of trashy/silly content.

It never ceases to amaze me how blatantly false, easily disproven claims about China, such as, "Douyin is all math and science videos" become common wisdom in the US. Nobody bothers to check for themselves. Someone makes something up, and everyone else just runs with it.

The best example of this is the social credit score myth, which somehow refuses to die, despite the fact that it's untrue and completely absurd.

That's false. You can download the app and check yourself.

I signed up to the Bing GPT "beta" waitlist (I hadn't logged into my Microsoft account in years) only to be told, days later, that I had to use Edge to try it. I noped out of there.

you don't ACTUALLY have to use edge to use it. just use a chrome extension to fake your useragent to pretend to be Edge. I despise needless microsoft hubris

You can just install the app on your phone and use it

I'd rather install edge on my computer than type more than one sentence using my phone.

On iOS you can use voice search in the app.

All of reddit leans progressive, I refuse to touch it myself.

I suppose those who have a problem with this would rather live in a cashless society, right?

That changed recently, 13th gen intel remains to be beaten.

In what? High-end desktop CPU performance? I don't think people in this thread is interested in that.

Funny that if you google "Who Owns the Future", the Google featured snippet says the answer is Jaron Lanier.

Why not? EPA exists because you can't "escape" the environment. But the web? If social media is full of crap, then don't visit it - that's what I do.

Let's be real: in 2023 a significant portion of our lives is online, and that's not going to go away.

I can't just not have a smartphone. My kid's baseball team only publishes schedules on FB. Local bakeries only sell their stuff, fancy cakes, via Insta. I have multiple work and personal emails and some of them get BLASTED with spam cuz of one purchase I made for replacement springs like ~5 years ago.

Virtually all of my banking and stocks are online. They'll still send me paper sometimes but there is no way to do money transfers or basic life activities like paying my bills without using their app.

Even if I don't look at it, my wife does. My kids do. They spread the memes, and potentially invite all sorts of shady malware into my network. Ditto for my coworkers, my employees, my bosses.

Just "don't visit it" isn't an option if 95% of the population does.

Maybe the people growing up with all this will do a better job in the future. We still haven't even solved the health issues caused by Junk Food - why should Junk Social Media be any different.

This is beyond social media.
