$3.9m over 2 years? Give me 2 years and I'll build that for $3.8m.

My point is that it's a ridiculous sum of money over a long time frame for something that's not very complicated and of questionable value.

I don't care about internet points.

how does Linode compare to Amazon AWS?

Apples to oranges. AWS's main appeal isn't VMs (EC2), it's the huge portfolio of other services you can make use of.

Linode is more of a VM host with a few also-ran services that they are experimenting with (Load Balancing).

If all you need is somewhere to host a cheap VM, go Linode. If you want to make use of a larger collection of services (that you don't have to maintain) to build applications on, AWS may be worth a look.

You can use Linode for not cheap VMs too. A good use case for Linode is high bandwidth sites, Amazon's data transfer charges are horrendous.

Seriously want to move to Europe now. As a U.S. citizen and web developer, how hard is this to do? Can I just get a remote job here and then move? What are the VISA issues?

My biggest concern is that my salary won't be enough to pay my ~$1k/month student loan debt.

Are there a lot of virgins on here or something? Why is this on the front page?

Well let's see.

- The surplus of males in Silicon Valley is a rather well known thing. NYC has the opposite problem.

- CS/Engineering majors also have this problem.

- Many in the tech industry label themselves as having aspergers.

There's a startup trying to take advantage of this problem.

I'm not saying it's not an issue. I just didn't find the article informative in any way.

And I was jokingly poking fun at the HN community, which obviously seemed to hit home to a lot of people.

I think it's a fascinating issue. Personally I would never move to the Bay Area mainly due to the huge imbalance in male/female ratio.

Not that NYC is heaven in terms of dating/sex life. I definitely don't get laid left and right. But at least the opportunity is there if I so chose to pursue it (which unfortunately since I'm a dude, involves work. I wish I could just set up an OkCupid profile and filter out a maxed-out inbox of requests).

The weather is much nicer in the Bay Area, and people don't look down on you if you are living on ramen while your investment bank buddies are raking it in.

Sex (or lack of it) is something everyone can relate to.

First off, all these things are terrible and no woman deserves to be treated like this. But the last part of #5 really has me questioning the validity of the author.

"A coworker invites me to his home under the premise of getting a few people together. When I arrive, there is no one else there. We watch TV and I go to retrieve my things to leave which are in his bedroom. His 6'4" frame blocks the door. I tell him I don't think it's a good idea for us to date. He sits on his bed, pulls me onto his lap, and sloppily puts his tongue in my mouth. He follows me home every day for four months “to hang out”. He makes me responsible for his crippling insecurity. He tells me I need to tell others we are in a relationship. He tells our boss. I resign myself and tell my friends. We live together for four years."

After all this, you lived with the guy for four years?

Can someone explain to me why people still use Vim and Emacs? Is it more efficient than GUIs like Sublime Text?

I only ever use Vim for quick edits and fail to see how one can be more effective in it when you can't click and highlight text.

I just find Vim so much faster. There is a learning curve (http://www.thejach.com/imgs/vim_learning.jpg), but once you're over that curve, you can't stand regular text-editors anymore! Fewer key-presses and your hands not needing to leave the keyboard (or at least, infrequently) = fast.

I should add, I don't just use Vim, I use the IdeaVIM plugin for PHPStorm and Webstorm, for development zen. :-)

I can't convince you that Vim or Emacs is more convenient than Sublime Text. You will have to find that out on your own.

And yes, you can highlight text, using Visual mode or the mouse.
