SATA and AHCI are already on their way out, being replaced by PCIe and NVMe. That removes most of the abstraction that is actually obsolete, but it doesn't pretend that SSDs aren't fundamentally block devices. About the only thing NVMe does that is perpetuating a fiction about the underlying flash is that the read block size and write block size are the same thing. All the rest is abstraction that's absolutely necessary until we completely change our conventions for computer architecture and operating systems.
