How big a scene is Vancouver for HN-type people? I'm thinking of basing my next startup either there or in Seattle, and presence of HN readers would be a positive factor for either.

Vancouver has many regular meetings that would probably be of interest to most HN reader. If you're new in town you might want to check out these events:

Django Meetup (small hacker crowd): http://www.meetup.com/djangovan/

Mobile Monday Vancouver (more business-y): http://www.momovan.com/

Launch Party Vancouver(more business-y): http://launchpartyhq.com/

Vancouver Python User Group (bit more academic): http://wiki.python.org/moin/VanPyZ

MoMoVan and Launch Party is good. I try to make it out to both as often as I can.

I just started going to VanDev, too. http://www.meetup.com/VanDev/

I usually present each month at the Vancouver iPhone Developer's Group Meetup. http://groups.google.ca/group/vancouver-iphone-developers

+1 for coming to Vancouver. My perspective is maybe skewed: two different YC companies (Snipshot, Auctomatic) have sublet office space from us, so we've been more surrounded by the YC/HN culture than most. But I would say that we at least have critical mass here, and it's a very nice place to be.

What area of town would be best for a 1-5 person startup office? I'm sort of torn between actual office space and just getting a really nice house or loft for live/work combo for the team.

I've also seen some of the SocialPicks guys cruising around.

There's quite a few of us, we have about 10 people show up to each meetup and we just started up a couple months ago. Although I have no idea what Seattle is doing.

We're moving our startup to Vancouver from Toronto (ideally) this spring. It's closer to the valley and the weathers much nicer.

Once I'm in the city I'll attend the HN meetups.

we should have a Montreal one too!! who is up for it?
