I honestly prefer this format. I got all the critical details within 10 minutes, the press will be able to salivate over it for the next week, and I'm still just as hyped about the devices.
I think Google are going to lose out though. This was a potentially huge launch. For example: The Guardian has absolutely nothing on this at the moment, but they were all over Surface and the iPad Mini. They'll catch up in a couple of days, but there will be no livestream on the Guardian front page etc.
Sure. It beats re-scheduling and having all the invitees re-book travel on a very tight deadline (not to mention where, it's possible NYC won't be able to host such an event for a while).
If SF had an Earthquake right before a scheduled event, I wouldn't hold it against Apple if they made it into a press release type announcement.
