I'd rather carry a credit card than a dongle I have to plug in and launch an app each time I want to pay...

agreed, but i think this was designed in a world where you have static/passive nfc tag like this: http://nfctags.tagstand.com/collections/nfc-kits/products/nf... & you have the dynamic part "in the cloud".
