King John's Lost Treasure (historytoday.com)

King John's treasure is still very much a part of the cultural landscape in Norfolk. Anyone digging a hole for gardening or construction purposes runs the risk of some smartass coming along and asking whether he has found King John's treasure yet.

I saw a documentary some time ago that I can't find any more about some guys who raised money to look for King John's treasure with ground penetrating radar. They were unsuccessful but with more money and more recent technology there might be a startup opportunity in there somewhere. On the other hand, I can't imagine they'd be allowed to keep it.

The law is clear - Treasure Act 1996. They'd get 1/2 the value and the other 1/2 goes to the landowner.

But - no, they wouldn't get to keep the items or dispose of them as they wished.

In my experience people do not lose treasure and also do not get mysterious fevers from emotional turmoil as was so often claimed in European history. A ruler usually has a lot of experience facing such things, I believe the answer lies with Murphy's law and Occam's razor - he got his shit took and mfs poisoned his ass.
