Ask HN: Is there an open source (maybe torrent-based) alternative to YouTube?

As YouTube stops allowing ad blockers, I feel like an open source, Torrent-based YouTube alternative would be nice. Maybe then even allowing a bit of pirating!? Treating sharing video media as a common good not something anyone should be able to monopolize.

It's not really a monopoly with Vimeo, PeerTube, Twitch, TikTok, and more around... they have just built a superior product for most people.

Something like what you want will never supplant YT because people want to make money producing content. We get better content because people can spend more time/money to produce it. If you are blocking ads, are you supporting the creators some other way?

This is an amusing take, considering how many people want to forbid the AI companies from training on the same content.

I think I was not very specific, but I think there is a lot of video on YouTube that does not make any money for the producers and in the past YouTube also did not show ads for these videos, but now they show Ads even if the producers of the content don't receive any money. I watch mostly lectures and niche videos on YouTube, I am pretty sure for most of these videos, the only entity getting Money out of it is YouTube.
