There was a rain-triggered debris flow not far from me recently that impacted several families I know; they were well outside of the evacuation area, though were told to "be ready to leave just in case"

They had their cars packed, facing out of the driveway, but it didn't help. The roads were impassable about 15 minutes after the rain started.

Improvements to the models of these are definitely welcome.


A key point to remember about evacuation situations: it's not just the dangers you'd face by remaining in place during such an order, but the risks en route, both by the initiating emergency and the increased traffic flow. Bugging out earlier can be a huge factor in avoiding inconvenience, injury, or death.
