How to make self-hosted maps that work everywhere and cost next to nothing (muckrock.com)

Protomaps is a hugely important development in mapping. I switched from spending time and cash managing and hosting a Geoserver to putting all my map layers in a cheap shared web hosting with literally zero maintenance

I can’t speak highly enough about Protomaps. Took my bill from $200-300+ in my high traffic months to something like <$5/mo. Relatively easy to get started with as well. I’ve been super happy with it.

Can you share some experiences with geoserver, good and bad?

also https://github.com/umap-project/umap/ found it quite handy for personal needs: importing geojson, curating info via custom properties, visualizing it using map marker tooltip templates, exporting gpx and using it in OsmAnd on my phone

Are there any solutions for getting these maps working on mobile platforms? I would like an SDK I can use on iOS and Android.

the year is 2024 and hosting some maps has a "cost" - mind boggling. a good coder always finds "free".

Please share your wisdom :-)

He already has ;)
