I like the discussion. It's peering into the direction we are headed seems apt and likely enough.

I think I disagree more than a bit about how cloud-based we are today.

The article uses Signal to point to server side being less grand than we might think. But Signal feels like a nearly pathalogical example. Messages in signal have very little fan out: it's a rare event when to people read a given message. There aren't brand or media outlets also generating content alongside people. There's some multi-media photo-sharing or voice records, but most of the items shared are well under 1KB. There's no feed curation algorithms or ad targeting mechanisms running. Signal is just not very representative of must apps, nor is it where users sink lots of time into. (Their attempt to add blogging seeks to change fan out & thus increase time-spent).
