Yeah I think part of that was Steve Jobs' extreme aversion to being wrong. And he of course shared a lot of personality traits with Musk (narcissism in particular) so that makes sense.
Even today Macs don't really have 2 mouse buttons, they just call a double-finger click a "gesture" even though it is simply a right-click.
