It's about bringing some parts of the image closer to whats intended by the filmmaker, at the cost of other parts of the image (usually noticeable by adding gradients to flat color). That isn't going against the filmmaker's intention, so much as respecting the contrast the filmmaker wants at the cost of some gradients.
