The trend seems to be to make everything into appliances, masses of individual ad-hoc tasks, all with their idiosyncratic logic and no way of interoperation or composing them to accomplish anything but the exact task intended.

There's an App for That. Except when there isn't it Just Can't Be Done.

P.S. Gnome 3 is way ahead of Blender in usability. Blender is nowadays very usable, but it's still not great. Having a billion buttons shoved away in menu hierarches is not power, it's more akin to having a billion idiosyncratic Apps.

Edit: Want to add that Blender usability keeps on getting better. The increased use of the node interface is making Blender a lot more usable and powerful. Being able to connect any too ports is something that would require combinatorial explosion with buttons and menus.
