The Spartacus miniseries had female gladiators, and they tried pretty hard to make it work, but it didn't look very convincing. Being bigger, stronger, and having a longer reach confers an enormous advantage.

The TV show with this theme didn't make it to production.[1] The book series, "The Valiant", isn't bad.
