In my opinion is much worse to spend a whole hour writing a cover letter to have to explain the reason why someone is applying, go through the special form to apply for the job answering a number of questions and get no feedback. A person spends 8 hours a day if not more applying, when could spend time doing other things in life that matter most. When lucky, have to go through a 5 stage interview process with changes of getting ghosted at the very end, with 4 hour take home tests that take a whole day.
