Stop asking for cover letters. The job market is ridiculous and most people need to apply for tens if not hundreds of jobs. We're required to submit our resume, and we're also required to manually enter all the information from our resume into terrible CRM interfaces. On top of that, you want a custom open-ended writing assignment? Get real. If you want a sample of my writing to see how I communicate, ask for that, I can recycle it.

I get it. We're not the only fish in the sea. But neither are you.

Exactly. It’s just leveling the playing field. I’ve been doing generated cover letters based on cv, job post and a few other data sources with manual review + adjustments with a very decent callback rate.

OP never asked for a cover letter. So your comment isn't relevant.

If they had pointed to their ad, I may have known that at the time of writing. However, cover letters are required almost universally. Prospective employees know this, and are collectively responding to bullshit-questions with bullshit-answers. Perhaps the tide is turning, but this single small employer's opinion is not representative of the industry.

Assuming the 'time of writing' was around the same time as you submitted your comment, it was about 12 hours after OP had pointed us to their ad:

Okay? Do you read every comment on every thread and read all the links in detail, before responding to a tell/ask post? I don't, and I don't think I'm abnormal in this regard.

I've only run into a requirement for one around three times.

I have run into goofier, more elaborate, things than cover letters, but that's another story.
