Mostly because reddit users are migrating away due to the API changes planned at the end of the month.

Apollo is one of the most popular iOS apps for using Reddit. It will no longer be useable by the end of the month due to API changes Reddit is making. Reddit wants to charge for API usage and it will cost the developer of Apollo millions of dollars for something he until now had free access to.

Reddit refuses to give users an option to subscribe to their own API keys, so Apollo has no choice but to shut down and return subscription money to the app itself.

If I was Christian (the developer of Apollo), here is what I would have done. (it might be a little too late now)

1. Program a placeholder into Apollo for the user set their own Reddit API key. Tell users it will be supported as soon as Reddit provides a machinism for providing a subscription. And provide a reddit support link and encourage users to request an API subscription feature.

2. Christian should set up his own Lemmy instance which is API only.

3. Give reddit admins (many of whom use Apollo) to designate a corresponding Lemmy subreddit channel. For example the sub https://lemmy.ml/c/cars might already be taken. But the admin of reddit.com/r/cars can designate in the description or sidebar that their Lemmy sub is https://lemmy.ml/c/cars2 It wont actually matter too much.

4. Apollo will then seamlessly integrate both the reddit and the designated Lemmy sub into one view. It might be messy at first but it would give Apollo the ability not to be hamstrung to one platform.
