You still have to match pairs based on type.

No what I mean is you buy 30-50 identical socks per type.

You get one box per type.

Then you stuff the 50 identical socks into the same box. Replenish when at 50% capacity.

How do you do wear-leveling? The socks may start as 20 identical pairs, but in a few weeks to few months, they will be all shades of grey.

> How do you do wear-leveling?

I seem to be the only one here who has a preventative solution instead of treating the symptoms.

Each and every pair of socks is mated for life and wear-leveling is only a problem to the extent that I favor my dominant foot.

The clips have a high retention rate such that no more than one clip comes loose each wash cycle, which means it is obvious which socks made the failed escape attempt.

This hasn't been a real problem for me. I'm not sure why. Some of it may be that I buy black socks, not white, and some of it may be that I mix freshly laundered socks into the clean sock collection, so every sock gets used about the same amount overall.

Washing with only cold water helps substantially with color bleed.

Ah, that might be the difference. I use cold water for all of my laundry.

That’s oddly not much of a problem for my socks, but as soon as it fades visibly, out it goes

Yeah, with all the vendor lock in it's not possible to repair even your own socks these days ...

Sock darning was a think until the mid-20th century.

It's a pretty interesting technique. You basically reweave the worn part of the dock with fresh thread/yarn.

I have darned socks this century.

Wow, that's amazing. Why?

They had holes in the toe area, easy to repair.

I don't like shopping, not even amazon.

I feel a little guilty about how much I consume so try to conserve when easy.
