Sounds to me like he's still given too many responsibilities to the CTO, which is fine for a small company but won't scale either.

First two are for VP of Product, third is VP of Eng and the fourth is the one that CTO should really focus on

In a bigger company, CTO wouldn't write requirements even. They would be focused on vision and roadmap and work with others to do research and make the requirements concrete.


You are exactly right. Things of course change a lot with company size.


C-level execs should steer companies not write platitudes and opinions as blogposts...

A CTO coding for their company is much more aligned with it than one doing a "content for startup founders and tech leaders" substack business on the side.
