I just redid http://cluedb.com/ - before it was a light social network; now it's basically a simplified mailing list.
Because there's no timeliness to items it just tries to find an item that a user hasn't seen every every day. This lets me make more efficient use of the back catalog.
It's implemented in Tornado. The backend is flat files!
