Pretend Bret Victor's ideal IDE had been created. How much would you pay for that IDE? How much do you pay for JetBrains? Or Github Copilot? It's not that it's impossible, it's that there doesn't seem to be any money in it.

there never seems to be money on anything ahead of time and everything seems "obviously needed" after it achieves the famous "market fit". yet somehow radical stuff gets invented and the world changes.
was not very familiar with his ideas so this is a great thread to learn something new, but its fair to say that when it comes to programming our interface with computers has stagnated for a very long time.
software development might be too anxious and anal-retentive a pursuit to be the testbed for new ideas. activities like livecoding and computer assisted performance of arts might be where something practical develops
