But Amazon has optimized that in most cities, the item you're ordering is typically in a warehouse near you. The bigger the city, the more likely. From those few locations they can do rapid sorting and send packages to the last mile delivery stations.
UPS and FedEx have to pick up from everywhere. That gives them a "first mile" problem that Amazon doesn't have.
