As one of the comments on that thread points out, every desktop browser seems to allow text input, and every mobile browser is obtuse like iOS Safari.

This is not the case, I have used date pickers on desktop that were equally atrocious. Granted they were implemented in JS, so not a problem with the browser rendering but still, if we are talking about design here, the designers of those interactive elements need a stern talking to as well.
