I think federal, state and local governments should take the lead and start having and using Mastodon accounts.


That wouldn't really help, though.

Even if Mastodon took off, there would be more and less desirable nodes. Governments, and then celebrities, would seek those desirable connections to avoid being associated with the spammers, trolls, etc. Then the spammers, trolls, etc. would demand access to whoever controls the most desirable nodes, and the fight would be exactly where it is now.

They can move it off Twitter, but as long as the fight remains about a perceived "right to be heard" as well as a right to speak, it's going to be the same fight.


Yes the same fight. If somebody comes to our town-square and plays loud music day and night and says they have a "right to be heard", what do we do? What does the city-council do?

But if Twitter owns the town-square and makes money out of advertisers to hang out there, they would probably allow it.
