That's a perception shift I've never really had. Servers have always just been computers with dial up modems, then networks, then the internet, for me. I've always known that I can, if I want, have a node on the internet that I fully control. It's just not been a priority for me in decades now.
I bet it really is a bit of a rush for someone the first time they make it work.
