Is it better for the brand when the only way to get the product is to buy it from a scalper?



I think it might depend on the brand. This is the approach Rolex is taking, for example. They haven’t ramped production yet the brand is stronger than ever. The secondary market is able to set higher prices than dealers so that is where the volume is found. I don’t see that tactic working outside of veblen goods however.
