I could be wrong, but I think back in the day the computer monitor was the whole system for debugging and viewing the state of a running computer (which is why the debugger on an Apple II is called a monitor, for example) but now we just use it to mean the physical screen.



I'm not sure about that.

CRT monitor were a relatively late addition to terminal devices. Traditional terminals were hardcopy printers; they printed the output you received onto paper.
