All the answers in the stackexchange.com are trying to justify it rather than provide actual/factual reasoning.

Having holes definitely weakens the material strength and will cause those holes to only grow bigger in size.

Just like it's often said that the most basic explanation is likely the correct one, I think it's nothing more than JPL trying to put their mark on the Rover/on the surface just because they can.
