Years ago I switched from a development engineer track to a support engineer track. I find the work very meaningful because a customer comes to you with a technical issue that needs to be solved. In the end, you're helping a person to succeed. It's a short-term challenge with a concrete, measurable goal. This path has taken me everywhere up and down the stack from Wireshark to data warehouses!
