I read an article a while back which argued that Thomas Edison's greatest invention was not the incandescent bulb, but rather it was Menlo Park. A community of engineers working together to research and invent new things. This model has been replicated at nearly every company that invents anything.

There isn't much room for a lone genius anymore. The really smart ones are smart enough to build their own Menlo Park, which is basically what Elon Musk has done with Tesla and SpaceX. No one is going to build a modern car or rocket alone.

There are a lot of anonymous geniuses out there working at companies building and discovering amazing things. They likely don't have an appetite for the politics involved in running a company or being a public figure. If it wasn't for Steve Jobs, Woz would have been perfectly happy working as an engineer at HP. That's all he ever wanted. It's unlikely any of us would have ever heard of him.
