As a pre-teen I was really into this and with copies of _Beneath Apple DOS_ and Zak's _Programming the 6502_ I wrote my own nibble copiers and boot sectors.
yes. we used to modify the applesoft rom card to pretty stop the CPU, start hacking the memory to find out where copy protection routines were and patch the code. The same concepts even transitioned into the first macs for cracking and patching. Fun stuff
