MVC requires me to write at least 50% more code than asp.net. That's what I mean by unnecessary. And I'm referring to the "old" mvc model, I haven't bothered with asp.net core mvc.

You should try, because now there is almost no difference between MVC and WebAPI. You just have controllers with different base classes.
