The contemporary consumer OSes of the time, MacOS 8 and Windows 95/98 were pretty crash prone back then. If you weren’t religious about hitting command-S as your worked it definitely wasn’t unusual to lose your work.

Ok more like, never using unsaved work. I was horrified thinking some old school OSes ate files from FS left and right.
