Ask HN: Where are the creative, collaborative, fun corners of the internet now?

In the late 90's and early-mid 2000's, there were various public communities that thrived where people created things together, learned how to code together, traded memes (before it was cool). Do places like this still exist? or has it all been relegated to Twitter, reddit and 4chan?

It just seems hard to find a small-ish community that has it's finger on the pulse of something now.

A few that come to mind from long ago: AOL (warez rooms, etc), DeviantArt, various IRC channels, maybe some old subreddits.
