Because humans are not social animals? Because protecting your own offspring as long as possible is NOT a thing?

Everything with even slight benefit is selected for to a degree based on that benefit.

Having parents is beneficial. Having grand parents is probably also useful. Having great grandparents... well someone has to get eaten by that lion.
