Terrifying. I have been randomly assaulted (not a woman, it was a physical assault) on a train in Vienna once. Everybody was surprised and scared and nobody did a thing. I got out not seriously injured by sheer fortune.
It's probably a fact of our alienated urban environment where everybody is an untrusted stranger anyway and nobody wants to take even minimal responsibility.
I bet such things happen way less in rural environments and in more tight knitted communities.
