Sony takes minority stake in Discord, integrating into PS5 (theverge.com)

I feel much better about Sony doing this than “Oh no, the disc is just a license” Microsoft

I suppose Sony Interactive Entertainment is different from Sony Music, but once upon a time Sony thought that, if you had the audacity to play one of their CDs on your PC, it'd be a good idea for them to install a rootkit on your computer. After the initial outcry, they released a tool that purportedly removed the rootkit but in reality simply hid it.

With how Microsoft is handling Github I'm quite happy with them. Anyone worried about Microsoft acquisitions is living about a decade behind with the belief that Ballmer is still running things.

They can fix that godawful login process before I'm on board!

It's like someone challenged themselves to use as many domains as possible during authentication. The only company that plays worse with my pass manager in terms of which domain I need to save it under is Alibaba's cloud thing

Also they killed Skype so kinda glad they didn't get their grubby mitts on Discord. It'd already be called Discord Teams and keep trying to sign you up for some enterprise bullshit when you want to make a call haha

> Oh no, the disc is just a license

All of these game companies share that sentiment. Some just took it a little too far.

I wonder how many PS5's could've been produced with that money instead of improving social integration.

Kind of difficult to engage with friends socially on your platform if nobody can buy your platform.

Probably zero.

Short term thinking

Wait do you think Sony had to decide between a PS5 budget and Discord integration?

They can probably afford both
