Please let me filter by a company's timezone/citizenship requirements? If it's "work anywhere within 3 hours of GMT -8", or "we can only hire EU citizens" then that immediately rules out lots of companies for lots of people.

Great comment! I'm working on gathering data like this!

Hi HN friends!

A possibility opened up for remote work to come out of the niche into the mainstream.

But I’m sad because I see how big tech corporations are already forcing (maybe a bit strong word here, but it seems like this from what I see in the news) their employees back to office.

What can happen, if people have the courage, is that these people who want to work remotely but their company won’t let them, will change their job.

And here’s my small contribution—a tool to choose a new company who works remotely.

I’m curious about your thoughts on big tech corporation remote policies?

I’ll add one piece here - it’s not just the big tech co’s and their employees that matter here. Tons of little companies are looking to big tech and will follow their lead on remote policies - wherever they go.

Yes, exactly! And it's all over the news. Google goes back to office. Amazon too. Netflix says remote work is a pure negative. So definitely there are smaller companies who follow that lead.

Luckily, there are other big co's who embrace remote, like Twitter who says: work remotely, permanently.

And I'm not saying that hey big co's, close your offices. I'm just saying that please give the option for your employees to decide themselves.

For me, it's about freedom, really.

But where's the freedom when Google says that you'll have to formally apply for up to 12 months of remote work in “the most exceptional circumstances."

And I feel that currently we still have the window open – remote work can come out of the niche into the mainstream as we just had the catalyst as a COVID outbreak.

Opportunity like this may never come again... or at least for a very long time.

/rant over

PS. I actually wrote about this "niche to mainstream" movement here in more detail just a few days ago: https://remotehunt.com/blog/big-tech-is-killing-remote-work

Hey. Where are you getting your data from? GitLab has a few more folks and countries now?

GitLab is a member of Remote Hunt and they added their locations themselves, but yes — it was some time ago. I’ll ask them to review at some point maybe.

But for companies like GitLab it’s quite hard to keep it updated. So many locations!

Maybe look into integration with hiring management systems. Workable (best for smaller companies based on price) and greenhouse represent most of the market iirc.

Hi! So, for a site about going remote, I found a lack of reasons displayed for the motivation. I'd say add a paragraph listing the reasons to go remote; I'm curious myself :)

Thank you! This is a great resource. One thing I will mention is that I am looking for something three days a week so that I can continue working on my computer vision learning/experimentation. I'm not sure how many jobs are like that really.

Another thing which is not necessarily very relevant probably but confusing to me. I see a lot of IaaS or SaaS, companies that are doing things like Wordpress in containers for example. And then there are icons all over the world, which presumably represent programming jobs? Or if not programming, highly technical.

Its hard for me to understand why it takes 30+ programmers to build and maintain software related to WordPress in containers, or many of these other businesses. I can definitely understand 5, or maybe even 10. But 20,30,40? Are some of these cities representing support roles, like customer service?

I would hire a three day a week developer if they were otherwise what I am looking for.

And we are currently hiring.

What kind of work do you want to do?

Ideally related to machine learning or computer vision, as long as I can keep ownership of my own projects separate. Otherwise I have a little bit of recent experience with Python, AWS and data analysis, and that area might be my second choice.

My third choice would probably be something using JavaScript, Reason or BuckleScript, since I have focused the last several years on JavaScript mainly in the back end and before that mainly on the front end. And although TypeScript is fine, my preference would be to have type inference and the few projects I have done with Ocaml have been enjoyable.

I also have some projects over the years with C++, such as Vintage Simulator (programmable emulator frontend), but my C++ has remained pretty basic over time, and due to numerous pitfalls in the language, I would almost prefer to learn Rust (despite my distate for the poor ergonomics that plagued it early on).

You can contact me at runvnc@gmail.com if you want to discuss anything.

I'm also looking for part-time development work. What kinds of positions are you currently hiring for that would be amenable to 3-day/week work?

Anything up or down the web stack is possible.

Front end dev, postgres, time series database, node, data visualization ... there’s much to be done over here especially over the next six months.

Feel free to point me to links or an email if you are interested.

As a parent I enjoy working remotely and go office once per month to do planning, meet with leadership and peers. I'm very productive, able to enjoy time with family and actually work more hours. I can't imagine myself commuting and actually just working 3-4 hours because of lunch, interruptions, coffee break, etc. This is my life, i respect others opinions which can find going to he office more beneficial. On top of that able to move to a city where real state price is not as crazy as Bay Area.

Oh would it be possible to filter for the UK. I guess you see that as a part of the EU, legally speaking this won't be the case for long however.

Believe it or not, some of us wouldn't mind some office time (but perhaps not 100% office time)

I agree! I’m a parent :) but I want to have a choice. I can go to the office if and when I want

Hard to work remote with little kids though.

Depends on your circumstances at home.
