It was written in assembly and required a boot disk to squeeze every available kilobyte out of the 640 a computer was guaranteed to have back then.

No, it was released in 1992 and lots of pcs had more than that at the time. It required a 386 (ideally 33mhz) with 4 megs of ram (I found the installation manual on an abandonware site), and was super fast on a 486.
