Sure it can be that way. Knowledge work tends to be a bit better but you do get death marches. A lot of that is coordinated from higher ups though so your manger might be an insulating force rather than the driving force. In academia you are directly under the advisor for basically everything. You should have a PHd committee and perhaps a dean of students. They can sometimes help but it’ll depend on how transparent the departments are. Clear communications go a long way. Ask for help.

I also think that people forget to ask for help. I certainly never did.

Some faculty are terrible managers too don’t forget that. A good manager is hard to find in general.
