Other than from a purely sales driven perspective, wouldn't it make more sense to simply allow the customers, OEMs, motherboard manufacturer and so on, simply control the features from the BIOS/EFI?




Not from the point of view of Intel's control and profitability!

Fun fact: It's known that some very large customers like Google ask Intel to implement particular special features. These features are present in the chips us regular folk can buy, but fused off (and shrouded in some secrecy of course).
