Mount this space as a filesystem:

http://code.google.com/p/google-docs-fs/

Not just yet. From the manual:

"google-docs-fs does not support the new feature of Google Docs which allows any file type to be stored. I am looking to add this in future releases."

Can we finally upload files that google thinks might be executable? It's so frustrating trying to tar up and upload a working directory as a backup and then having it rejected by gmail because it included some random executable classfile.

Am I reading this correctly, does everyone now have "Over 7578.763851 megabytes (and counting) of free storage." for any file type by just creating a Google account?

Uploading an MP3 file gives me an error on the general Google documents, but not on Google Apps. On a free Google Apps account I get 1024MB per user.

This might help explain why I got an e-mail from Google containing:

"As of May 10, any organization that signs up for a new account will be required to use the paid Google Apps for Business product in order to create more than 10 users."

"For instance, it’s now possible for developers to build applications that allow all users to back up files from their local hard drive to the cloud."

hmm...wonder who this is aimed at?

Feasible to build a Dropbox alternative on top of this?

I don't see why not. At $5/year for 20GB it could certainly be cheaper than dropbox. https://www.google.com/accounts/PurchaseStorage

Probably not really.

The GDrive is here.

Only about 5 years late.

Only about 5 years late.

"Altavista name means 'high view' and, has been launched on internet in 1995 at Digital Equipment Corporation Research lab in Palo Alto, California."

Five years later, who's moving into the top slot for search?

Dropbox says "Hi!".
