Submitting this because the discussion of the IPv6 concepts and their relation to IPv4 was useful, not because it advocates OpenWRT or that everyone go through the trouble of editing config files.
FWIW, I'm using a consumer router with IPv6 support with the proprietary firmware and the tests at the end of the article say that everything is working well. So, it looks like IPv6 is finally happening for people who don't have time to dive into this deeply.
