But why? All the choice we're familiar with relates to predator/prey interactions, sexual selection, finding food, avoiding danger, protecting the next generation, and so on. What possible reason could electrons have for preferring one outcome of an interaction to another?

Say "highly rudimentary" and you can ignore everything else?
